Our candles tell a story

A candle from Motor City Candleworks is one of the coolest gifts you can get for a Detroiter. Each candle is named for somebody or something special about Detroit. There's
Belle Isle Breeze, Cuppa Joe Campau and
The Paczki Priniciple to name just a few.
We've got more than 30 named candles in all.
Motor City Candleworks candles are packed
with fragrance. We call that our Detroit

Scents of History™ since each candle comes
with a short history inside the box. You can
read any of these histories by clicking on the
name of any candle under our company
name above.

High quality - Long lasting

Just a gimmick? Hardly! These are premium candles that are hand-poured from the highest quality paraffin wax. We think Detroiters deserve the best!

We use paraffin because we think it burns cleaner than soy. Also, paraffin is a by-product of oil production and does not directly contribute to the depletion of natural resources. Soy is often touted as better for the environment, yet because of the addition of chemicals to soy beans to make them into a viable wax, it is generally equal to paraffin and beeswax. Also, when soybeans are made into wax, it causes additional demand for a resource that is also used for food production, thereby raising costs.

How to buy our candles

We sell our candles in Motor City D-Lights, Votive Collections, Scents of History™ Two-Fers and in jars that we call Detroit Scenic Scents because they have an illustration on the outside of the jar.
These candles make up our
Scents of History
line, and each
comes with a unique story inside.
We carry classic scents and some very
unique scents.

We now also sell incense. Our Motor City
Incense is longer lasting, and comes in
bold fragrances. Like our candles, our
incense is named
-this time for places
in our great state of Michigan.

You can order all of our candles and incense directly from this website using our secure shopping cart. For ordering information, shipping costs and other FAQs, click here. We also sell our candles through area retailers. Click here to see who sells them near you.

Our own historic digs

Finally, we take pride that besides sharing Detroit history, we are a part of it ourselves. All of our candles are made right here in the Motor City in a shop located inside the old Murray Body Works factory complex, now called Russell Industrial Center. To learn more about the history of the factory, built in 1922, click here.
